Approximately 30 years have passed since the Great War that left so many nations devastated. Only four nations had truly “survived” the war.
The Earth alliance while demoralized at loosing Earth survived strong as ever with its capitol moved to Proxima Colony. Large efforts after the war were made to rebuild Earth but President Nash (who was reelected after the war) decided to make Proxima the permanent capitol after making this statement. “I don’t want to move…. It would be way too expensive to move the safe I keep my ice maker in.”
The Romulans while had tricked the shadows into thinking they had abandoned their home world, the death of the Praetor in the closing stages initially caused the entire empire to assault the shadows quickly fell into chaos after the war ended… Many of their outlying colonies revolted and a civil war shortly followed. The victor of the war is still in question as the borders were closed shortly after the fighting was assumed to have stopped.
The Narn and Centari both survived through luck and through what was termed at the time and “unholy” alliance. It is a good thing that the Narn survived relatively intact. Shortly after the war ended the Centari, sensing it was time to restore the glory of the old republic started an assault on many of the other nations who in their heavily weakened state could not have held them back. The Narns stepped in keeping them in check. After 8 tense years a war broke out over the golf resorts on Centari Beta Prime. Two years of endless slaughter and reinvasion of the same worlds over and over left both nations drained. The Rangers stepped in seizing the territory between the two effectively stopping the war and a peace treaty followed shortly after. With neither side trusting each other…. Old habits die hard.
The Rangers after the war disappeared from the public eye… some had speculated that they had completely dissolved but reappeared blazing a path between the Narn and Centari. After the peace was stabilized between the two nations they disappeared just as quickly as they appeared. Speculations were circulating that the Anla'Shok leader was killed in the ending battles separating the Narn and Centari. This seems to possibly be true as individual Ranger ships with their crews have been seen in various mercenary organizations in steadily increasing numbers over the last 10 years or so.
In the wake of the path the Rangers blazed inbetween the Narn and the Centari an odd occurance happened. A race little known except for their love of fish seized their chance and made a place for themselves. The Lyrans who were of such little consequence before both the Vorlons and the shadows completely ignored them, took their fleets and occupied the Klingon homeworld. They quickly setup their military headquarters there and military production boomed. The Narn and Centari fearing another Ranger intervention simply shrugged and went back to planning each others doom.
Jump drive technology has developed little in the time that has passed. Although it has become safer efforts to shrink its power requirements have been unsuccessful. Keeping it limited to large research vessels and military ships.
Several months ago an Earth Alliance research vessel traveling in hyperspace (the space that jump drives use to travel in) detected a small ship adrift. The research vessel dragged it in and turned back for home to conduct a through search of the ship. When it arrived back at Proxima Colony the research team realized what they had lucked into. The ship they had found was a large chunk of a Vorlon military transport. The researchers were amazed and tried to access its computers. Unfortunately the computers were long gone, but there was a trapped safe. (A couple of disintegrated researchers later) they opened the safe and discovered a small device. They started trying to decrypt its data but ran into a brick wall. After months of trying a researcher finally managed to get a single document out of the device, all it had was a set of co-ordinates.
