On this year they say the new telescope Darwin will be in operation in space. It is being designed to look at planets in orbit around other stars. They say it will actually be able to figure out what the atmosphere of these planets consists of, if one at all. Ya know like 75% nitrogen, 18% oxygen, etc. They say if we find one like ours in composition wise, pretty good bet it will have life on it. Boy that would have a profound impact on the various religions on our planet eh ? sci.esa.int/science-e/www/area/index.cfm?fareaid=28

Indeed. Just about a month ago a new planet orbiting inside the "habitable zone" of Gliese 581 was found. Although no direct evidence has been found, Gliese 581c is at such a distance from the star that liquid water may exist on it. This indeed is a great discovery as most extra solar planets are gas giants or are too close/away from stars to have liquid water, considered to be essential for life.
As for effects on religion, many religion already accept the concept of alien life. The Qur'an says: "All praise belongs to God, Lord of all the worlds", the Hindus have also some weird mention of other worlds, the Jewish Talmud makes reference to some 18000 other worlds. They will probably do the same they did with native americans, first they had no sould so we could kill them. When it was getting hard, they said "Oh no!, they have souls! Lets convert them!". There will be all kind of moral compromises so they can tweak their distortioned views to the reality.

I think the odds of intelligent life are extremely low, and may require a very wide search. I see microbial as much more common.
I go by that Comospermia theory were life is everywhere in the Universe or at least in every remotely habitable crevice. I look at the hot springs and under ice caps as examples of how life seems to find a way to exist even against strange odds.
Of course Shalafi we would go there and suck up it's resources and polluted the crap outta it, like we did here.
Why in gods name would we change what we would do there,... we cannot change what we are doing here!
Don't anyone argue we would preserve such a wonderful/rich/new habitat, ....... think Amazon

If history is such a great teacher why is it we keep making the same mistakes. History is not taught well. It is more and more being dropped from the curriculum of schools who now have to favor math and such for MCAS testing, similar to gym and arts.
Iraq to me seems about the same as Vietnam. An ill conceived war, for stupid reasons that we are stuck in. Matter of fact some of the same faces that were involved in that war (Rumsfeld and others) are the same now.
We do not learn from history. 70% of folks favored this war at its start, stupid f**ks, now we are screwed with half a trillion dollars spend so far. Nice investment !! Now everyone dislikes the war,... Duh,.. unfortunately they lacked the brains to see this 5 years ago.
I would really have liked to see that half a trillion go into solar/wind power (that is like 10 freaking billion per state !). Can you image what that amount of money would have gotten us ?
