Teams form rosters (similar to a baseball batting order), rosters are formed by random order by the ref from the player pool for each team. Rosters are public knowledge once formed and will be posted. This roster represents who will wing with the player/Flag whose fleets have engaged the enemy.
When battle occurs:
The guy who owns the fleet commands the fleet/team. His wings are picked from the top of the roster.
Should the flag player not be able to make the scheduled battle the top roster pick becomes the flag flyer.
The team can have one sub, that is the next player in the roster (technically not scheduled to fly that night). This sub can be used for anyone who does not show up for the scheduled battle. Should the team be short a player for whatever reason the guy next on the roster (sub) if he is present can fly for the missing player. It is up to the Team Leader to encourage the sub to be present if needed. The sub does not replace the flag player, the top of the roster does
If both a regular player is missing and the sub fails to show up, the battle is done with A.I. for the smallest ship in the fleet. There is a 20 minute window to get either to show up. Game proceeds after that.
Once a player has flown (as a wing for a owner of a fleet) he moves to the bottom of the roster. Flying the flag does not impact your placement on the roster.
Thoughts ?

Well think of of them as the mini sub from "voyage to the bottom of the sea". It used to fly and be a sub too!

No one has picked this apart, please do so else it may well become the rule for the upcoming game. I still want to review Dflys suggestion and figure out where we differ and see if that is important.

I have re-read it a couple times now, and although I have a couple minor issues with it, I think it can stand as it is. You may however find it a tad more difficult keeping the roster order records than you think. I hope not.

Actually the RL's keep the roster order, so it will not be that complicated for me It would be my suggestion that seperate private message boards be created for each team with locked access to the members only. In there a thread can be delegated to the roster and its current status. That way all memebers can see when they are nearing scheduled flight days or Sub position. Just a thought.

I think you would need keep the rosters open to all, not closed to each team. THis way there would be no confusion between teams. I do however wish the idea of having seperate locked threads for each team for "tactical reasons".

I like the rule in general but I would never want an AI to fly when there is someone that could take its place. Never forget we play this for fun.

I understand your concerns on this Van, but if you guarantee that someone will fill the spot most times you will see their ace pilot filling it, which is what we are trying to avoid. By stating you WILL get an AI if your team does not show, you are pretty much guaranteeing that 3 of the 4 who should be there will be there. Afterall, each fight will have a sub who is supposed to be available should someone miss, meaning there is always an extra pilot per match to start. Only if 2 people miss would there be an AI.

Good feedback guys, yes the rosters should be public and not hidden behind the team forums (opps), we can just make a thread on the main forums. Ya the AI is only to insure that the battle proceeds on the night scheduled, and that would only be if half the team players scheduled for that night, fails to show up. I feel battles will be fast and furious and if we do not move them along we risk bogging down. Due to the Cugs players and their being used to faster paced games we are trying all we can to maintain a fast tempo. For the team who has 2 of 4 players fail to show up, that is the penatly and will likely result in a lose for them. Hopefully they can still do some damage though.
Looks like maybe a few more tweaks to go, and Dfly your welcome to add it to the rules sections.
