Galactopedia Article: United Federation of Planets
Founded in the old Earth year of 2090 by a group of refugees escaping the ravages of conflict on Earth. (See Earth World War III, years 2084-85). It began as a morale boosting enterprise rather than a true nation-state. The colonists numbered only 2 million people and were clustered in a hundred long range sleeper ships. (See The Great Escape ).
The escaping armada traveled one sector in ten years when an unexplained stellar phenomenon transported the ships over twelve sectors to an empty Earth-like planet. (See New Earth ). The social effect of this good fortune resulted in a religious revival and a belief in the Brotherhood of Humanity . At first the colonists were unable to determine their galactic location and thought themselves to be cutoff from the old world forever. Their view of Earth was blocked by the Eagle Nebula . Exact date when contact was reestablished is unavailable due to the peculiar history of the Federation’s space exploration.
Suffering from low population numbers the people of the Federation are deeply paranoid of military threats. Hence the political will for deep space exploration was not present during the first century of its existence. Instead small bands of pioneers set out in small scout vessels on independent journeys. First reports of alien species reached New Earth in the first decade of the 23rd century, and first meetings between humans of the Earth Alliance and the UFP occurred in the decade of 2240.

The technological differences between the Earth Alliance and the United Federation of Planets are vast. Although the population difference between the two powers is great their military power and production capacity are largely comparable. The more numerous population of the old world excels in large scale manufacturing and large scale power production. Earth Force ships are large and heavily armored.
Federation advances focus more on miniaturization, force field manipulation, and life extending techniques. Starfleet ships are much smaller then their Earth Force equivalents and rely on energy shielding for protection. Yet their weapon capacity is nealy equal, mostly due to the use of anti-matter torpedoes by Starfleet.
…
The two centers of humanity do not trust each other. Numerous political parties in the Federation decry the danger of being conquered by the Earth Alliance. In some heated debates old world humans are described as “uncultured and dirty.” Meanwhile the Earth Alliance views New Earth as a break away colony, destined to be reabsorbed due to the population difference.

Statistics
Main planetary system consists of six planets. One is habitable and serves as the main population center for the Federation. Other planets in the system are unfit for unassisted Human occupation.
Capital:
New Earth (pop. 11 million)
Secondary Colonies:
Folkvang (pop. 2 million) Various domed cities and mining facilities.
Ragnarok (pop. 1.5 million) Frozen planet with a methane atmosphere. Houses mining and research facilities in several domes.
Asteroid Bases and Space Stations:
Many located throughout the system. Their total population is estimated at 1 million people.
