Prologue:

URSA MAJORIS, MIRAK STAR LEAGUE( ISN) -- The history of the Lyran and Mirak species is full of long periods of fanatic violence, with few lasting spurts of peace in between. Moderate elements of the two empires, looking to increase trade, entered into peace talks in spite of the rising hostility towards this idea. The diplomats, undaunted by the assassination of the Mirak ambassador, arranged for a Peace Accord to take place, ending centuries of strife. The two sides dispatched their “Peace” fleets, and in a surprise move, the Lyran Emperor Shalafi accompanied the expedition to ensure no accidents happened preventing his glory and the success of the Accords. It was not meant to be…

For the Mirak, the memory of past atrocities by the Lyrans (such as the Battle of the Den 20 years before) and the involvement of a young Prince Shalafi at that time, was too much temptation to bear. Mirak Captains purred with evil intent upon hearing the news.

Though on the verge of a lasting peace between the Lyran and Mirak nations, when the two fleets met in the neutral zone, old anamostities flared and as far as historians and survivors have been able to piece together, a probe launch apparently provoked a hair-triggered Mirak Admiral (named WarChild) to either intentionally or accidentally fire drones, thus starting the melee.

Subsequent efforts to broker a cease fire failed, though the political makeup of the negotiators themselves is seen as anethma to success. Federation, Klingon, Gorn and Romulan Diplomats even entered into the fighting in various guises. Gorn and Romulan consuls actually exchanged blows discussing the border actions.

The Lyrans lost the Peace Accord battle with 1 Dreadnought, 2 Cruisers, and 3 Destroyers annihilated along with their 1100 crewcats and most importantly, Emperor Shalafi. The Mirak came out victorious with only the loss of a Destroyer and a Frigate suffered. Subsequent analysis suggests this was a Mirak planned preemptive strike meant to take out the leadership of the Lyrans and devastate their primary fleet while its guard was down. This is confirmed by the promotion of Mirak Admiral Warchild to Lead Admiral and his being given an expanded command. The reaction of the Lyran high command was to place an official bounty upon Warchilds’ head.

Up and down the front both nations braced for war, fleets mobilized, the drums of war were beaten, and the neutral zone violated. Across the Lyran homeworld, the thunder of a 21 disruptor salute echoed in the atmosphere. For a brief time the Lyran nation nearly broke out in civil war as various factions tried to seize the government. Chairman Meow Zedong was elected to the throne of the Lyran Empire. Now called Lord Meow, he appointed Vice Regent Vangard as his #2 Kat in the Empire.

A Total State of War:

LYRA PRIME, LYRAN STAR EMPIRE (ISN) --Throughout the Galaxy nations were on edge as news broke of war between the Mirak and Lyran nations. With the Klingons publicly blaming the Mirak for provoking this war, and the Federation accusing Klingons of covert military aid shipments to the Lyrans, fears of this war spreading out with far wider implications abounded. With the Klingons now insulted by these accusations, suspicious rumors broke of the Federation “again meddling” in the affairs of others. Federation regional ambassador Admiral Spock found himself emphatically denying that the United Federation of Planets was stepping up its military aid to the Mirak Star League, and in a new twist, denying rumors of a Gorn Dreadnought Battle Fleet being called to this sector. To make matters worse, unconfirmed reports have leaked of secret intercepted messages from a suspected hitherto covert Romulan operation to undermine the Peace Accords and instigate a regional war. To what end has yet to be determined.

In perhaps a last ditch effort, Ambassador Spock sent out a priority message to both sides:

"As Acting Ambassador to the Mirak Nation, and friend of the Lyran Empire, I speak to both nations today, as equals.
The Federation Empire cannot stand by and simply observe the destruction of nations that is about to occur.
The Federation urge the end of "Warchilds March" into Lyran space, an end to the destruction and death about to meet both nations, and an offer of a second attempt at Peace. A new Peace Accord.
There is still time to avert a quadrant wide catastrophe."

WarChild Brings Peace:
URSA MAJORIS, MIRAK STAR LEAGUE (ISN) -- Mirak Admiral WarChild’s forces, now sarcastically known as the “Bringers of Peace” fleet, continued on their onslaught. Flush with victory, they immediately ran into a Lyran rapid response squadron defending the Lyran frontier. It is thought that Mirak intelligence directorate (aka WHISKERS) agents expected just such treachery and expected the Lyrans to have forward deployed such assets. The Lyrans naturally argued that the fleet was coming to its former leaders’ aid following distress signals and the obvious blatant aggression of the Mirak. In either case, the Battle of Twenty-One Eighteen found a Lyran force, understandably shaken from their recent loss, outgunned and with unclear and untested leadership, facing off with a battle hardened ruthless determined force in their face. While they fought valiantly, the Lyran Imperial fleet was crushed mercilessly, with the Mirak even toying with the last crippled ship like a wounded rodent…before finishing it off. Losses included 2 Lyran Cruisers, a Frigate, and over 600 crewcats while the Mirak suffered no ship losses. The new Lyran leader Lord Meow’s silence on this matter is startling, perhaps even disturbing. With Martial Law imposed on Lyra Prime and in the frontier colonies, it is difficult to ascertain the current conditions of the Lyran Star Empire. With the war just beginning, no one can predict its outcome but dark days are surely ahead. Throughout the entire Alpha Octant, civilian merchant traffic is being disrupted with untold consequences…the suffering has merely begun.

The March Continues:

URSA MAJORIS, MIRAK STAR LEAGUE (ISN) – Mirak forces report victory after victory in what appears to be a massive apparently pre-planned invasion of Lyran space. Across the Neutral Zone, Lyran forces are under pressure and being driven back under a coordinated assault of such massive proportions as has never been seen in these parts of the galaxy. The Mirak leader, DroneChucker Fly, has announced the capture of the previously neutral world of Lactarium (vic. 2012) by none other than the infamous Admiral WarChild – reviled by all freedom loving Lyran felines. In his speech before the Mirak parliament, D’Fly noted:

“We Mirak, came to the table willing to accept peace with honor, but the lecherous Lyran lack of Honor, leaves little room for honest brokering. Our own WHISKERS intelligence directorate has proof, classified proof, that Lyran Emperor Shalafi had been conniving to destroy our mighty “Peace Fleet” at the Peace Accord meeting place. They even brought banned Weapons of Mass Destruction in the form of Romulan Nuclear Space Mines!!! No freedom loving, honorable warrior race can abide by such deceit! In addition, the massacring of innocent Mirak merchant fleets by these dastardly Lyrans and their cowardly Romulan cloaked back-stabbers will not go unpunished! Admiral Warchild, hero of The Peace Accord Betrayal (2117), is rolling up these trash-eating Lyrans as we speak and tonight I announce the oppressed peoples of Lactarium in the Neutral Zone are freed from Lyran aggression and have asked for our protection. By a unanimous emergency vote, the Mirak Parliamant has elected to assist our Lactarian friends by incorporating them into the territory of the Mirak Star League.”

However, this reporter has obtained unconfirmed information that a lone Lyran force led by Fleet Commander Josh has claimed to have counter-attacked through the neutral zone into Mirak space. Subsequent reports indicate this fleet may be surrounded and preparing to fight its way out of a ring of death! Elsewhere deep behind Mirak front lines, there are reports of a massive increase in Pirate activity that has disrupted Mirak production. Several sources have stated that a battle has taken place near Faeles III (3612) between the notorious Pirate Hema and the Mirak Fleet Admiral Chut. Hema’s Cruiser was destroyed by Mirak forces with unknown loss of life. No Mirak reports have come in of losses as of yet.

Impulse 2 "The Lyrans Strike Back..."

LYRA PRIME, LYRAN STAR EMPIRE (ISN) – The Galactic Pandora’s Box has been opened, thus the lessons of history are forgotten time and time again! ! The Lyran Southern Forces under the command of Count Stargazer and Admiral Vanguard have begun their long anticipated counter-offensive. Following the violation of the long-respected Neutral Zone, Mirak Invasion forces under the command of Major Pita seized the defenseless former Carnivon planet of Sirius III (3221). There, amid hastily arranged fanfare, they planted their flag, even going as far as to rename it Planet Pita.

However, the Mirak Southern Invasion force underestimated the response as Lyran defensive forces deftly intercepted them. The Battle of the Tug (vic. 3122) pitted two Lyran Cruisers and a Battle Tug against a surprised Mirak Command Cruiser, Medium Cruiser, and a Destroyer. After a short and bloody cat-fight, the screams of the dying faded away and three Mirak burning wrecks dissolved into the inky blackness of space along with nearly 900 crewcats.

As the Mirak Command Cruiser was Major Pita’s own flagship, initial Lyran reports indicated the demise of the illustrious Pita. However, he was setting up the occupation of his namesake planet and did not attend to the battle himself. The Mirak fleet was assigned to Admiral Postman, but he is not thought to have perished there. On the Lyran side, as far as we can ascertain, one Cruiser has suffered [REDACTED BY LYRAN DEFENSE MINISTRY] (unscrambled by hackers: “severe damage…loss of about 200 crewcats of the 265 standard compliment”) and minor damage to the other Cruiser and Battle Tug (reports of three or four dozen severe casualties). Lyran sources indicate some sort of unconfirmed technological inferiority amongst the Mirak weapons. Reports continue to pour in and we at ISN News will keep you informed.

Impulse 2 "The Demise of Major Pita..."

URSA MAJORIS, MIRAK STAR LEAGUE (ISN) -- The Lyran Southern Front under the command of Count Stargazer and Admiral Vanguard have pushed back defending Mirak forces in a stunning defeat which has cost the life of the illustrious Major Pita and brought the risk of a merciless ruinous occupation of the friendly Sirian peoples on their homeworld of Sirius III (3221) in the hitherto Neutral Zone. As best as we can ascertain, the winners of the Battle of the Tug (Lyran Battle Tug, and two Heavy Cruisers) have defeated a force of three Mirak light defending ships. The Mirak Light Cruiser, Destroyer, and Frigate were destroyed along with Major Pita, who bravely went down at the helm of his ship. All over the Mirak Star League, somber commemoration ceremonies are being held. He will be missed. The Lyrans according the Mirak Fleet spokesman, reportedly lost a Heavy Cruiser and suffered heavy damage to the rest.

Impulse 2 "Captain Chufts Revenge"

URSA MAJORIS, MIRAK STAR LEAGUE (ISN) -- Mirak forces under Captain Chuft's command have struck a counter blow for victory at the Battle of Seventeen-Twelve. The Lyran's under Admiral DIFJosh have lost a Heavy Cruiser and a Light Cruiser. Losses have been slight amongst the Mirak fleet. This has brought the vanguard of the Mirak Northern fleet deep within Lyran space and on the edge of Planet Loofa (Vic. 1612). The Mirak forces are celebrating their victory as I speak. What has become of the vaunted Lyran forces...they appear to have tucked tail and run away.
