a "standard" ship.... example
Fed CA, CA+, CAR ect.. are line ships the CC plus would be a "command ship"
the line ships are the general run of the mill vessels that shipyards would crank out nonstop... ie not the "leader" or "command" variants of the hull types.

I was thinking of smaller border units such as the bottom of the chain of command. A Captain with a CL and 2 FFs, then his superior with a CA and 2 DDs, his Commander with a CAR and 2 CLs. The Sector Commander would have 2 CAs and a CC

Hey all, OK, First I don't like the 9 ship min/max currently, I mean if I wanna have two 450 point ships so be it. Like for this one, I'd have preferred to have had more smaller ships...not allowed. Second, we should be corralled into a series of choices...say, one command ship of such and such, and no more than such and such. Unless of course one is a pirate or it fits the plot better. Finally, I don't think games such as this need be fair. I mean, rising from adversity and winning is way better than merely having had the better piloting skills. I think losing is ok and in the crads sometimes, the "my lot in life" thing...give us a plot...then see where it goes...like our history

My one concern is how does a front line commander with a Cl and 2xFF at all deal with a sector commander with a 2 CA and a CC.
The difference here are very very large. He cannot, there is no punch through the front lines, by a victorious captian, you stop cause you have no chance of threatening the next line of defense.
The ideal I proposed earlier had less of a spread with Sector commanders on a BC with escourting CA ships and CC crusiser for the front line commanders with escourting CA ships.
You ideal makes it pretty much impossible for a front line commander do much of anything but fight his opposite front line commander and stop at that.
I will play in whatever you set up but I am not a fan of the proposals I am hearing. Small ships ? Why? Aren't we trying to mimick the border between two nations? And you want to run late era? This all seems really wrong to me.
I don't get it, but like I say will go along with the flow.
As always I appreciate someone else running the game and will have fun even if my CL and FF fleet engages whatever opponent I meet.

My one concern is how does a front line commander with a Cl and 2xFF at all deal with a sector commander with a 2 CA and a CC. HIRE DFLY<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ;D I think here you would have your front line ships that won wait for the secondary line ships to get there, and then you go in with your total of 4-6 ships to hit his secondary line of 3 ships, provided that is how the refs allow it, hint hint. Yes this would make things closer, provided all use the same race. If you are allowed to take whatever 1 race you want, certain races always have an "edge" over certain other races, thus you hire Dfly ;D see above, but i agree otherwise.

I agree. A Platoon commander would never assault his opponent unless it wasa much larger operatiion or he was just trying to get an edge over his enemy Platoon Commander. i.e intelligence or morale. Nor will any one player be 'stuck' with FFs. The front-line players would have 2 of the "small" fleets and 1 of the next size up. The 'overall' Commanders will have the "big" stuff but must account for their counterpart and any "breakthru' that might occur. Also with the Merchant Commander, those FFs have something to gun for. FFs also are wonderful mopping up large ships after an engagement. I'm just trying something different than the same old, same old. Just for my info, who would want the front-line positions?
